3…2…1…Blast off! Fluid mechanics provides the theoretical
foundation for hydraulics, which focuses on the engineering uses of fluid
properties. It’s time to put this theory to use in making the water equivalent
of a space rocket!
Task:
This competition requires you to build a simple water rocket
from plastic bottles that use water and compressed air as the propellant. Thus,
using hydraulic and pneumatic forces, the task is to propel rockets to a long
range with a high degree of accuracy. You don’t have to be rocket scientists to
participate here but you could do your best to ape our space engineers!
Gameplay:
Round 1 –
Range of the rocket will be the criteria on whichthe team is
judged. The final points will be calculated as: Points = Maximum Range
Travelled
Round 2--
Precision is the criteria on which the team will be judged.
There will be 4 circles and the teams have to attempt maximum points in 2
shots. maximum points taken will be the winner. The tentative arena will be as
shown below.
Points:
20 points for innermost circle
15 points for second last circle
10 points for third last circle
5 points for outermost circle
0 points for missing all 4 circles
Rules:
- The range will be the minimum distance taken from the
launcher to the point where the rocket hits the ground.
- The angle at which the rocket is to be launched can be
decided by the participant.
- Launcher will be provided at the spot. However, if any
team wishes to use their own custom launcher, they are allowed to do so as long
as it is a fixed launcher.
- Attachments to enhance the rocket’s capabilities such as
fins, wings and parachutes are allowed. In such a case, teams may be required
to make their own suitable launcher.
- The rocket should be purely mechanical. Any type of motors
or chemicals will not be entertained.
- The optimum amount of water to be put into the rocket is
left to the participant.
- A single trial will be given in the first round.
- The same rocket must be used for all the rounds. Although
minor modifications to the
rocket may be made between the rounds but the body of the
rocket has to be the same in all the rounds.
- Maximum no. of participants per team is 4.
- If second round ties ,first round score will be
considered.
Specifications:
- Maximum size of the bottle is 2.25L.
- The working fluid allowed in the rocket will only be
water, provided at the venue of the
Competition.
-
The water will be pressurized with the help of a foot
pump that will also be provided.
Disqualifications:
Any of the clauses below if satisfied may lead to disqualification
of a team:
- If any rocket is found to be dangerous to launch by the
organizers and judges.
- If a rocket blasts before the launch.
- If a rocket launches before indicated by the organizers.
- If any part of the rocket breaks off from the rocket
during the flight.
- If any readymade models are used.
- If any design rule is not abided by the participant.
- The organizers reserve all rights to change anyof the
above rules as they deem fit. change in rules, if any will be indicated on the
website. In case of any discrepancy decision of the judges shall be treated as
final and binding on all.

Rs.100/-
